Depression Treatment

There are many stressful situations in life (e.g., financial issues, the loss of a job, death, relationship issues). Although most people can easily move on from these things, others can’t. These people suffer from depression. They want to stay home instead of moving forward with their lives. This can become worrisome, especially if they also have suicidal thoughts.

What are some of the common symptoms?

Although all of us will occasionally suffer from feelings of sadness, it’s important to have a professional psychiatric evaluation if you experience any of the following:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness, emptiness, or anxiety
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Loss of pleasure or interest in those activities that you found enjoyable in the past
  • Sleep issues (e.g., sleeping too much, not sleeping enough, sleeping at all times of the day)
  • Feeling guilty, hopeless, or worthless

What happens when you don’t seek treatment?

You can’t ignore it when you’re suffering from depression because doing so will only serve to prolong your suffering. Therapy may be the best way to help heal the varying levels of mental pain you’re experiencing. It’ll help you realize that your extreme pain will eventually end. While this is the main reason you should seek treatment, there are a few other important reasons as well.

Long-term Damage to Relationships

When you ignore the signs of depression, you may find yourself falling into a spiral of sadness and pain. This can cause you to become short-fused. This shift in your temperament may severely damage your relationships. When unrecognized as an illness, this mental health condition can also cause you to become alienated – something that makes it even harder for you to get the help you need.

Loss of Job or School

This mental health issue can become so handicapping that you don’t want to leave your home, which means that both your job and school will suffer. However, with the correct treatment, your life can move on. Sometimes this means talking to your school counselor or boss so that they can make accommodations (e.g., schedule changes) for you.

Risk of Suicide

When you’re feeling depressed, you may become convinced that your life is hopeless and you’re doomed to suffer. This can lead to suicidal thoughts that can become all-consuming. Therefore you can’t ignore the signs of being depressed, or you’re risking losing this battle.
